How to Install Wallpaper

It is a part of our brand promise to provide beautiful, high-quality wallpaper that is not only stunning in your home, but also easy to install. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of installing wallpaper using our thick, heavy-duty paper, ensuring a smooth and professional finish.

The key lies in having the proper tools and materials at hand, allocating enough time for the project, and choosing high-quality paper.

Let's jump into the tutorial!

Wallpaper Install Tools:

  • Drop cloth (so water and paste doesn't get on your floors)
  • Water tray or bathtub
  • Step stool or ladder
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Sponge
  • Plastic smoother
  • Utility knife and extra blades

Step 1: Preparing the Wall Surface

Before you begin installing the wallpaper, it is crucial to prepare the wall surface properly. Ensure that the wall is clean, smooth, dry, and free from dust, dirt, and flaking paint. This means wiping down your walls top to bottom to get them as clean as possible. Installing wallpaper on top of dust will affect the final result and longevity of your paper.

For damaged or uneven wall surfaces, priming is highly recommended. You can use a standard spray bottle or a damp sponge for this step. Wallpaper is not going to cover issues with wall texture or damage.

Tip: Wait 2 weeks for fresh paint to full cure and off-gas before applying wallpaper.

Step 2: Activating the Glue

Using a heavy-duty sponge or spray bottle, it's time to activate the adhesive by getting your wallpaper wet. This can be done a few different ways, but here is what I've found works best.

Two Options:

1. Roll wallpaper loosely and submerge in a tub of water or bathtub.

2: Using a spray bottle with tap water and turn the nozzle to the spray function. Apply water generously to the back of the wallpaper, focusing on seams and edges.

Step 3: Booking the Wallpaper

Once the wallpaper is thoroughly wet, gently fold the top and bottom so that the pasted sides meet together in the middle. This process is called "booking." Take care not to crease the paper while doing this. Allowing each panel of paper to rest in the booking phase for at least 2-3 minutes is important.

During this time, the paper absorbs water into its fibers, activating the glue. As it dries, the paper will tighten, resulting in a smooth and professional finish.

Step 4: Hanging the Wallpaper

After the booking phase, it's time to hang the wallpaper. Begin by positioning the first panel at the top of the wall, aligning it properly. Using a laser level will aid in getting your panels perfectly plumb.

Gently unfold the booked wallpaper, smoothing it out as you go. Make sure to press the paper firmly against the wall, removing any air bubbles or wrinkles. Using the sponge and/or plastic smoothing tool is helpful to remove air bubbles and affix the paper to the wall.

Step 5: Adjusting and Re-positioning

Our wallpaper allows for re-positioning within the first 10 minutes. If you need to make adjustments or align the panels more precisely, you have some flexibility. This feature ensures a hassle-free installation process.

Step 6: Trim the wallpaper

Once your wallpaper is completely smooth, Use a straight edge and a utility knife to trim your wallpaper to your desired length, typically where it meets the baseboard on your wall. Using a new blade for each panel will help for a clean, tear-free cut each time.

Repeat around the room, checking often to ensure your wallpaper is plumb and smooth.

And voilà! You have successfully installed your new wallpaper! Our thick, heavy-duty wallpaper not only looks stunning but also offers ease of installation and removal.
